Hair & Make-Up – my views.
Having shot many hundreds of weddings, I appreciate how critical hair and make-up is to most brides and bridesmaids. I have seen many brides do their own make-up without any drama, but in my opinion brides normally seem much more relaxed when they hire a professional to take care of this task for them.
Certainly from a photography perspective, I always feel a little more comfortable if I know a professional hair stylist and make-up expert are on site. Experienced professionals in these areas appreciate the time constraints that come with a wedding, know how to position brides for better photographs, and the really good ones have a real knack for calming nerves, which is a huge bonus. They are also great at fixing anything that goes awry.
Inevitably when shooting many weddings I tend to work with lots of hair and make-up professionals, and I often work with the same people over and over again. Over the years I have come to trust and respect a fair few individuals and have no hesitation in recommending their services to anybody getting married. Here are the details of those I consider the best in the business…
Sophie Noble – Hair Stylist
I have known Sophie for almost ten years now, and she is fastest hair stylist in the East!
As well as working with her on many weddings, Sophie is part of my team when we shoot fashion editorials for magazines. Of all the hair experts I have worked with I can honestly state that she is the fastest I have ever seen, and is a truly gifted individual.
Sophie has a salon in Bishop’s Stortford and covers mostly Essex, Herts, and London.
Emma Quin – Make-Up Artist
Emma never fails to produce stunning work. Apart from being a fantastic make-up expert, Emma’s other strength is her personality. She is a lovely person and has a great knack of putting her clients at ease – indeed I have seen her calm the most nervous of brides. It’s not unusual to see Emma helping with the wedding dress, such is her drive to keep everything running smoothly.
Like myself, Emma is lucky to be a recommended supplier at Hedingham Castle, and so I am fortunate to work with her regularly.
Emma lives in Sudbury and covers mainly Suffolk and Essex, although I have bumped in to her further afield.
Margaret Coxall – Hair Stylist
Like Emma and myself, Margaret has worked at Hedingham Castle for many years and I have been fortunate to work with her on many occasions. As well as producing some absolutely beautiful hairstyles, Margaret’s experience is always evident with her calming and friendly manner. She is also great at organising larger groups of bridesmaids which often comes in very useful.
Margaret has a salon in Cambridge and mainly covers Cambs, Suffolk, and Essex.
Carla Brooks – Make-Up Artist
Although I haven’t worked with Carla quite as often as the ladies mentioned above, she has certainly made a positive impression on me at several weddings with her calm efficiency and beautiful make-up. Her passion to produce amazing looks is there for all to see, and she is great fun too. Carla is also trained in Airbase make-up, which looks great in photographs.
Carla is based in Brentwood and covers mostly Essex and London.
Karen Lowe – Hair Stylist
I met Karen when we worked together on a styled wedding photoshoot for a new venue in Suffolk, and I have since worked with her at weddings and she even helped me with my latest promotional film. Karen is a very experienced and creative hairstylist, and is great fun too.
Karen is based in Sudbury and covers Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambs, and Essex.
Celina Keywood – Make-Up Artist
I have worked with Celina at numerous weddings around Essex and she is always great fun to be around. Her passion for her art is evident for all to see, and she is very talented. In November we attended the Essex Wedding Awards where we were both finalists, and Celina went on to win best Make-Up Artist – well deserved. Her work is really stunning.
Celina is based in Braintree but covers all surrounding areas.
